The Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) is an annual document created and maintained by the Ames Area MPO staff.  This document covers the Ames Area MPO planning region and is combined with the Iowa Statewide Transportation Program (STIP) to form vital components for an extensive, ongoing, and cooperative planning effort for the programming of federal funds.  The Ames Area MPO TIP serves as a list of federal-aid surface transportation improvements for the region.

FY 2018-2021 Transportation Improvement Program

The Ames Area MPO is currently accepting applications for STBG projects for consideration into the FY 2018-2021 TIP. The TIP document is developed annually to program transportation projects receiving Federal transportation funds and later included into the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). All projects that are selected to receive funding must be included in the Ames Area Long Range Transportation Plan, known as Ames Mobility 2040.

Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG)

The Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act converts the long-standing Surface Transportation Program (STP) into the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program (STBG) acknowledging that this program has the most flexible eligibilities among all Federal-aid highway programs and aligning the program's name with how the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has historically administered it. The STBG promotes flexibility in State and local transportation decisions and provides flexible funding to best address State and local transportation needs. (FAST Act § 1109(a)) More information on the STBG Program is available here.

Transportation Alternative (TA)

The FAST Act eliminates the MAP-21 Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and replaces it with a set-aside of Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) program funding for transportation alternatives (TA). These set-aside funds include all projects and activities that were previously eligible under TAP, encompassing a variety of smaller-scale transportation projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails, safe routes to school projects, community improvements such as historic preservation and vegetation management, and environmental mitigation related to stormwater and habitat connectivity.

  •  Due to changes in TA Project Selection process, the Ames Area MPO, in coordination with the Iowa Department of Transportation, will relase the TA Application schedule for FY 2021 at a later date.
